The Law of One is a series of five books published between 1982 and 1998 by Schiffer Books. The authorship of the series is complex, but the publishers attribute some or all of Don Elkins, Jim McCarty, Carla L. Rueckert, and a non-human intelligence named Ra.[1][2] The series presents commentary and transcripts of an ostensible "dialogue" between a questioner and Ra, who is described as an entity[3] made up of an entire civilization of extra-terrestrial beings that are fused into one unified consciousness.[2][4][5]

The introduction to the first book explains that the questioner is Don Elkins and that Ra is a higher density life form speaking through the body of channeler Carla L. Rueckert, one of the authors.[6][7]

The material published in these particular books has been cited by sociologists as an example of New Age UFO contactee culture and described as a convergence of" ufology and trance channeling" where human channelers who are said to be aligned or in harmony with Ra ostensibly act as a "receiver" for the "vibrations" emitted by the alien intelligence. According to proponents, Ra are members of a highly advanced race of extraterrestrials who once visited ancient Egypt and assisted with construction of the pyramids.[8]

According to Carla L. Rueckert, she produced the material by entering into a hypnotic state (which the authors called an "unconscious trance") where she would answer questions posed by Don Elkins.[9] Her answers were believed to be direct communications from Ra, which is in line with standard views on channeling.[10] The books are described as "dialogues" between Don Elkins and Ra that were recorded, transcribed, and edited by Jim McCarty to produce the five books.[2][7] The material in the books conveys an elaborate philosophy called The Law of One having the basic principle that "All is One" or that all things that exist are ultimately the same thing.[11] The five books explore this premise in relation to many aspects of life including philosophy, religion, spirituality, cosmology, anthropology, history, politics, physics, biology, geology, and the paranormal.[11][12][13][14][15][16]

Contents [edit]

The book series articulates a nondualistic philosophy according to which all things are The Creator:[17][7][11][18]

It states the universe was created by the One Infinite Creator--out of itself--by distorting its energy into the parts of existence called "distortions".[19] The process occurred one distortion at a time, in a specific order.[7]:16.12, 76.15[20]

The first distortion created by the Infinite Creator is called Free Will, the second Love, and the third Light. All other substance comes from an interaction of these three distortions.[21] Akin to a hologram or a fractal, each part of the creation is also the whole.[7]:13.5-13.9[11]

Cosmology [edit]

Ra claims each star or planet is a creation of an intelligence called a Logos.[13]:28.7 Through the Logos is the creation of many sub-Logoi. One sub-Logos would be our sun.[15]:54.7 The sub-Logoi, in turn, create sub-sub-Logoi. Human beings being an example of sub-sub-Logoi.[13]:29.7 Each Logos, sub-Logos, and sub-sub-Logos is a microcosm of the Creator.[22] The Logos created seven levels of progression for[23]spiritual evolution, and Ra called each of these levels a density or densities.[24]

Secondary sources have interpreted densities in a variety of ways. Some have described it as a "dimension" as in "a higher dimension." A density differs markedly from the Cartesian notion of dimension, however, so the description of a density as a dimension is problematic, especially due to the fact that the books never use the term "dimension".[19] Some have described it as a physical concept[11] in addition to a non-physical concept, while others describe it as entirely non-physical.[19][24] In any case, all commentators agree that different densities are associated with different forms of consciousness and different phenomenological ways of being.[2][9][20][25][26][27][28]

  1. The first density is the density of the elements (Earth, Wind, Fire, Water) (physical matter such as atoms, molecules, rocks, metals, liquids, gases).[7]:13.16
  2. The second density is the density of organic life: plants, animals, bacteria, etc.[7]:9.13
  3. The third density is the density which human beings inhabit. It is the density of self-awareness. It is also the density of duality/polarity.
  4. The fourth density is the density of love and like all subsequent densities, is inhabited by mind/body/spirit complexes of a higher level of spiritual evolution than human beings on present day Earth.
  5. The fifth density is the density of light or wisdom.
  6. The sixth density is the density of unity consciousness, where love and wisdom unite, where all polarities unite.
  7. The seventh density is the gateway density, the last density before mind/body/spirit complexes merge back into the Creator.[7]:16.19
  8. The eighth density is the beginning of the next octave.[7]:28.14

Life [edit]

Ra claims that humans are complexes composed of a mind, a body, and a spirit, and therefore would refer to an individual human as a "mind/body/spirit complex". Ra believed that humans, along with the earth, are going through a process called harvest.[26][29][30] This included claims that there are many other living beings in the universe that are similar to humans but differ in body, intelligence, culture, and spiritual evolution.[25] These beings, like humans, are referred to as mind/body/spirit complexes.[31]

His story follows that individuals from other densities have incarnated on earth to contribute to the harvest.[2][6][7]:12.26-12.31 Ra claimed that all mind/body/spirit complexes, after being formed in third density, progress upward through the densities as they evolve spiritually, until they become one with the Creator at the end of seventh density.[11] This evolution is accomplished in a series of incarnations.[32]

In order to progress from third density to fourth density, individuals must make a choice between service to others or service to self: or, in ordinary language, between altruism and selfishness. The purpose of third density is to make this choice.[7]:16.12, 76.15[19][33]

As entities evolve, they progressively balance and unblock their "energy centers" which directly correspond to the chakras. The Law of One series includes an extensive discussion of these energy centers.[2][34][35]

Each energy center is associated with a color and a corresponding Hindu chakra:[28]

  1. Muladhara is called red-ray.
  2. Svadhisthana is called orange-ray.
  3. Manipura is called yellow-ray.
  4. Anahata is called green-ray.
  5. Vishuddhi is called blue-ray.
  6. Ajna is called indigo-ray.
  7. Sahasrara is called violet-ray.

Additionally, humans and the earth are undergoing a transition from third density to fourth density. This transition is linked to a process called harvest.[12][29] This involves a "quantum leap" within our physical reality, said to occur approximately 30 years from the time of the 1981 Ra dialogues.[36] One of the dialogues mentions a general time frame of 100 to 700 years for "transition on earth from third density to fourth density".[37][38]

Moral choices are discussed through the concept of polarity. Ra explains that there are two polarities: service to self, and service to others.[27] These two polarities approximately relate to the everyday concepts known as evil and good, or selfishness and altruism.[11][25]

"Service to Others" is described in terms of an energy center configuration where the green-ray center radiates out toward other beings.[39] This results in compassion, love feelings, and acts of service toward others.[33]

"Service to Self" is described in terms of an energy center configuration where the green-ray center is pointed mainly inward. This energy center configuratoin causes the entity to feel love for itself, but not for others. These feelings lead to self-serving intentions and actions, or "service to self."[9]

Ra views the Earth as a living being that has a mind, free will, and grows over time both physically and spiritually. He explains that the Earth is currently in the process of changing from third density to fourth density.[7]:6.14-6.19

Influence [edit]

2012 [edit]

The harvest was one of the earliest mentions of the 2012 phenomenon. The entire book series centers around the harvest, which is described as a major spiritual and physical change that will occur around the year 2012.[13] Each New Age concept introduced in the series is related to the harvest, for instance, wanderers are described as choosing to incarnate in human bodies on earth so that they may help the harvest. The series predicts that 2012 will bring cataclysms, such as earthquakes and tsunamis, that cause the death of a large number of humans.[14] New Age and 2012 proponents like the New York Times bestselling author David Wilcock have cited The Law of One series as seminal in the formation of their beliefs and the popularization of 2012 beliefs in general.[11][22][23][27][35][40]

Mayans have described the 2012 phenomenon as a Western invention that has no relation to authentic Mayan beliefs.[41] Instead, the 2012 phenomenon has roots primarily in New Age spirituality, including The Law of One book series.[41] The Law of One series has been described as "the most widely cited set of channeled materials." This series was seminal in the development of New Age spirituality. Aside from the 2012 phenomenon, it also introduced and popularized concepts such as polarity, spiritual evolution through densities, and wanderers, which have taken on a life of their own.[11][19][40][2][42]
