In spirituality, channelling (BE) or channeling (AE) is the belief that communication of information occurs by or through a person (the channel or medium), from a spirit or other paranormal entity outside the mind (or self) of the channel. Channeling is part of the belief systems and rituals of religions, such as Candomblé, Voodoo, Kardecism, and Umbanda. The term channeling is also used as slang. For example: Look at that outfit, she must be channeling Gandhi.

Channelers claim to have channeled ascended masters like Buddha, Jesus, or St. Germain; people who have died; angels; higher dimensional beings; and extra-terrestrials of a spiritual or more evolved nature; and God. Channeling is a popular source of revealed teachings in some New Age groups. Well known channelers like Diandra (Salem), Esther Hicks (Abraham), David Reid Lowell (Michel), [1], Jane Roberts (Seth), Linda Dillon (13 masters and archangels), and Lee Carroll (Kryon) have volumes of teachings on angels, chakras, higher dimensions, future predictions, manifestation, meditation, non-judgment, now moment, past lives, and spirituality.[citation needed]

Several notable books describe the entering of a trance state to allow spirits to speak through the medium or channel (see séance). Some mediums use automatic writing or other methods to channel their entity.

  • All of Edgar Cayce's readings were carefully recorded, cataloged, and indexed. Those records are administered by the Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.), a foundation created to preserve and propagate the information he channeled. Cayce allegedly was able to tap into the so-called Universal Mind or the Akashic Records (a record of all history). Many books have been written about him and his readings. See the bibliography section on the Edgar Cayce page for a partial list. Unfortunately many books have been published under Cayce's name which contain only short sections of Cayce readings along with large embellishments by the editors. The A.R.E. In fantasy literature, the term channeling is sometimes used in other ways, particularly to describe a person's ability to draw on some form of magical power. The Wheel of Time series, for example, uses the term extensively (although it is by no means the only work to do so). Channeling is mentioned in Tom Robbins's Book "Skinny Legs and All".
