POVERTY AS A DISEASE AND ITS CURE: This lesson series was probably given in the early 1930’s, though we have been unable to verify the exact date. (The terminology makes it obvious that it was part of Vitvan’s pre-semantic writings.)  It has not been available in recent times, but with the world situation as it is now, this seems an appropriate time to make it available to students who feel a need for this information.

"When I carefully study the causes for poverty, I am forced more and more to the realization that poverty is caused by the human personality creating a sense of separateness from the flow or stream welling up from the inner Power-to-be-conscious.... This idea of the flowing forth of the creative life must be retained in the consciousness of one who aspires to cooperate intelligently with it and become a channel for that Power.... in order for the law to fulfill its purpose, in order for the Power to reclaim or regain those energies arrogated by the mind, and to bring them back into the orderly flowing forth according to the plan, the Power itself brings about a corrective condition. Ruminate upon this: Poverty is the corrective method the...Power uses to lead the wayward child back to alignment with the inherent plan for its ongoing. So disciplined, the mind serves the plan instead of serving itself. But the eternal order of growth and development cannot be permanently inhibited. So, that corrective condition, when observed in manifestation, is called poverty, fear, worry or disease."

PRACTICE OF THE WAY: Vitvan opened this lesson series in 1952 by saying, "The practice of treading the path, the practice of the way, is psychologically designed to take the system of thought that we call the instruction as given in the School of the Natural Order out of the mental and verbalistic level and make it workable in the daily life of the students." At the time Vitvan first gave these lessons he had just discovered Sri Aurobindo’s epic poem, Savitri. SEVEN RAYS OF DEVELOPMENT: The seven rays of development are the seven major streams of the formative cosmic forces of the universe. In this series of lessons Vitvan provides students with an understanding of these rays and how they relate to the Self-development process. He says:

"The seven rays of development stem from the Logos, the only begotten Son, in whom all Power, all Light, all Existences center. It is symbolized by Solomon's Seal, a dual triangle.

"During the past cycles of what has been called human evolution, instruction respecting these seven rays comprising the World Mother Substance has been very limited. In fact, it has been one of the most closely guarded secrets of the wisdom teachings. This much we do know: a given individual man which the World Mother ‘brings forth’ represents an epitomization of the whole cosmic process which the World Mother signifies....

"The True Individual on the Mind level as he stands on the threshold of putting forth again (reincarnation), he always sounds his scale, his notes, and one is flatter than the rest. It doesn’t ring out round and fully complete. He is going to incarnate on that ray, his weakest point.... We all stand on the threshold of putting forth and sound our scales,... and we will incarnate in an environment, even to the genealogy, and in the country, that will afford the best opportunity to experience expression and development on the weakest point."

These first three rays are called Will, Love, Activity; those three generate the other four called Science, Harmony, Ceremony and Devotion. In this course of lessons, Vitvan describes each of these rays and the characteristics of individuals functioning on them. Using this information, not only can we cooperate with our own development, but we can also better understand how to deal with one another.

He had moved to Home Farm and had an audience of students who were new to his teachings. TREE OF LIFE:  Based on Dr. H. B. Pullen-Burry’s book, Qabalism (1925), the Tree of Life followed Vitvan's lessons on Cosmology and might be considered a companion volume, rounding out information not provided in his other works. Vitvan assumed that students had some working knowledge of the Tree and its interpretation, so he provided only limited explanations of it. His descriptions correlating his instruction on self-development through the awakening of the force centers of the psychic nature with the stations on the Tree of Life shed new light on both his teachings and the significances of the stations on the Tree.

"Every phase in the individualizing process has a correspondence in the cosmic process. It is this relationship that we wish to stress in this series of lessons. A start has to be made on two levels; in description (mental) and in function (experience in reality); one the road map, the other the journey."

There are two statements which taken separately have very little meaning, but put together and grasped with one act of consciousness have actually worlds, beyond and within worlds, of meaning. They are: (A) No one can understand any ‘thing’ even the so-called simplest, unless he comprehends the whole of which it is the differentiated part. (B) No one can understand the synthetical Whole of any ‘thing’ unless he first grasps the structure, function and order of its differentiated parts. These two statements taken together represent the cultivated attitude that characterizes the advanced ones on the path. One’s position on the Tree of Life can be evaluated by the degree of his consciousness of these two, as functional aptitudes. This in no way disparages mental or intellectual concepts about these two; as I am a firm believer that mental information about a subject represents a most desirable safeguard to the Knowing after it has been attained. This is true whether the mental information was secured before or after that attainment called Knowledge. We go to Knowing through meditative feeling, conscious direction of creative forces, etc., but safeguard it, express it, describe it, etc., by and with the mental level faculties of conception, information, etc.

Even though these lessons were given half a century ago, they still seem timely and vital to students seeking to understand and assume responsibility for their own self-development. It is as if the rest of the philosophical world is now catching up to what Vitvan gave throughout his lifetime in presenting the ancient wisdom teachings in language understandable by modern Occidental students.

If you are looking for deeper insights and expanded understanding, we highly recommend this volume to you. Yes, it is challenging to read, but more than worth the effort. 8.5x11in. c2006.
