(Redirected from
Contactee)
Contactees are people claiming extensive and friendly
contact with aliens from other planets.
Overview
On June 24, 1947, the
modern era of flying
saucer sightings started with the Kenneth
Arnold report.
It may be a surprise to many people today, but the idea that
these were spacecraft piloted by aliens from
another planet was not the only theory at the time. Many people were
concerned that these were Soviet
secret weapons, possibly recovered from the Nazis, or
developed from their research.
The public became increasingly interested in UFOs. In August of
1952, there
was a particularly publicized flap
over Washington, DC.
George
Adamski claimed to have contact with an alien in September of 1952. Adamski
would become the first well-known contactee. His books became
bestsellers. He backed up his claims with photographs and movies.
Adamski claimed to have ridden in flying saucers, and traveled to
other planets. His aliens appeared to be good-looking humans. They
were friendly, and concerned with human affairs (particularly the
use of atomic weapons).
Many other contactees followed.
The general public treated the contactees with amusement.
Scientists who commented at all pointed out that the conditions
reported by contactees as existing on other planets (and the moon)
were at odds with what science predicted.
It has been suggested that the contactees may have been a
deliberate attempt to discredit more serious UFO research. The idea
is that they were either cultivated or created by the U.S.
Government to reduce the pressure to give the public an answer. This
could have been because the government had no answer, or had an
answer it did not wish to share.
Comparisons with Abductees
In the 1980s, the
term abductee
came into common use in the UFO community. While some people lump
the two groups together, the differences are reasonably distinct.
- The entities in contactee reports tend to be human-like. While
Nordics
have been reported in abductee reports, they usually accompany
less human types, like reptilians
or Grays
- The entities in contactee reports introduce themselves, have
names, and carry on conversations. The entities in abductee
reports tend to be anonymous and have very limited intellectual
exchange with the abductee
- Contacts tend to be pleasant, and voluntary. Abductions tend
to be unpleasant and involuntary
- Contactees tend to be open about their experiences and welcome
opportunities to tell the story. Abductees tend to be less public
- Contactees typically would welcome more contact, while
abductees may seek help to stop the experience
- Contactees present the experience as entirely normal (although
it may be telepathic).
Abductees may initially question the experience, and hypnosis may
be used before the story emerges
